APPLICANTS under the British Nationality (HK) Selection Scheme are required, towards the final stage of proceedings, to fill in Form 712A to re-confirm to the Immigration Department some personal data.

Item (c) of the form says: 'I do not have another foreign nationality/citizenship (other than Chinese nationality)'.

I seek clarification from the Immigration Department or Hong Kong Government: 1) Why is it predefined that we have Chinese nationality? If born in this colony we are British (British here meaning 'Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies' which was subsequently amended to BDTC etc). Under British law, I do not understand for what reason we are defined as Chinese Nationals.

2) From the viewpoint of the UK Government (and the Hong Kong Government), when BDTCs of Chinese consanguinity do not apply for BNO passports, will they become stateless after June 30, 1997, in view of the fact they have had no Chinese nationality since their birth? DAVID NG Kwai Chung
