SHENZHEN prosecutors have claimed success in the fight against corruption and bribery since a series of high-level scandals rocked the country earlier this year. President Jiang Zemin initiated the countrywide crackdown, warning that graft could destroy the Communist Party. The Shenzhen Procuratorate said the department had been working for years to fight corruption and had achieved some success. 'Cracking down on high-level corruption to maintain prosperity for the city is the objective of the Government,' a spokesman said, adding authorities had recently been investigating high-level corruption. They were also being more decisive in punishing those engaging in improper trade and commerce deals, the spokesman said. But while the Shenzhen Government is aiming to eliminate corruption in the city, some private enterprises and the police service were still without self-discipline. This was hindering the city's anti-corruption drive, the Shenzhen Daily said. Some of the security services were guilty of misusing their power. Unauthorised fining was popular, the newspaper reported. 'We have taken the first step to eradicate corruption in the city, but it will still take time to educate people,' the procuratorate spokesman said.
