SAU CHUN had been married to her husband for 50 years when he walked into their bedroom and hacked her 26 times with a chopper.

Lau Chuen claimed his 72-year-old wife made his life hell.

Lau, 77, denied murder, but his guilty plea to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility was accepted.

The elderly killer tried to throw himself from the 11th-floor landing after leaving his wife to die in a pool of blood.

At about 4 am on July 10, tenants of the Ho Man Tin building were awakened by a woman's voice screaming for help.

They realised the sounds were coming from flat 1130, but the door and iron gate were locked.

On the other side, the pleading voice was becoming weaker and weaker.

The neighbours pounded on the gate. Five minutes later, Lau opened the door and told them his wife had been talking in her sleep.

He refused to allow anyone inside the flat. The room was in darkness, so the other tenants could not see beyond the threshold.

But when Lau stepped into the corridor, they saw his hands and pyjamas were drenched in blood.

He walked the length of the hallway and began to climb the iron railings.

Fearing he would leap to his death, two neighbours pulled him back, and made him sit down until the police arrived.

The officers found Sau crumpled on the living-room floor in the blood-splattered flat. She was still breathing.

She said her husband had chopped her, and pointed towards the door.

They were her last words before losing consciousness. She died soon afterwards.

Lau admitted chopping his wife, claiming he had been tormented by her all his life. He said he had decided to jump from the building but first planned to 'get even with her' by chopping her legs while she slept.

He said that when she fought back with a stool, he became confused and killed her accidentally.

The High Court's Mr Justice Stuart-Moore adjourned sentencing until December 11, pending psychiatric and medical reports.

Lau suffers from emphysema and asthma.
