HUNDREDS of real estate agents marched on the Legislative Council building in Central yesterday to protest against the Government's Estate Agents Bill. The Hong Kong Real Estate Agencies Association, which organised the petition to legislators, said about 600 industry practitioners took part in the protest. In the petition, agents expressed concerns that the new law could force many small estate agents out of work and disrupt the industry. The association denounced the provision of criminal penalties such as fines and jail sentences for estate agents who provide wrong or misleading information to home buyers. It said lack of information on many older, smaller properties from relevant government departments would put estate agents, especially the smaller ones, at a disadvantage. The agents organisation proposed that real estate industry representatives make up the majority of members in the Estate Agents Authority.
