A REFRESHING look at love won for New Asia College the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Inter-collegiate Drama Competition. Its drama society beat the other three colleges to take the Best Performance and Outstanding Director awards with the romantic piece I Need To Be Loved. 'I believe human affection is an essential element in drama. No drama can be complete if this element is missed out,' said Nickal Ho Lik-ko, the director-cum-playwright, and the chairman of the society. The 45-minute show told of two couples - two teenagers and two people in their 30s. And, said Ho, it relied very much on the actors rather than on a strong storyline. 'It is a plot about love and it all hinges on the cast's interpretation of the set-up.' One of the leads, Li Yuk-ki, took top honours for her performance, sharing the award with Carol Liu Ying-kei from Shaw College and Alex Ng Ying-cheung from United College. Twenty-year-old Li, who played a rebellious 18-year-old, said effective communication with the director-playwright was the key to her performance. 'He was the one who created the character and it helped a lot discussing things with him,' she said, adding that she also spent a lot of time watching movies about teenage love to prepare herself for the role.
