VISA application procedures for Taiwan tourists to visit Hong Kong should be made simpler in the light of competition from the new Macau airport, according to a motion passed last night. Moving his motion, pro-Taiwan legislator Yum Sin-ling from the 123 Democratic Alliance said it took at least two weeks for Taiwan tourists to complete visa applications for Hong Kong. From early next year, Taiwanese could stop in Macau en route from Taiwan to the mainland. 'Macau grants visa-free treatment to Taiwan tourists to stay not more than 21 days,' he said. Democratic Party member Lau Chin-shek said the Government worried too much about political implications. The pro-China Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong urged a simplified system but not visa-free. Secretary for Security Peter Lai Hing-ling said visa-free status was not granted to short-term visitors as the island did not have diplomatic ties with Britain.
