ONE of the strengths of Ikea stores is how the company uses displays to show people how to co-ordinate furniture and home accessories. The new Mongkok store refines this aspect. Aside from the usual room settings, there are 'collage' displays which provide extra inspiration. 'We group similar styles under a theme: for example, natural wood, and co-ordinate products from furniture and accessories that you can put together for a unique style,' said managing director Caroline Mak. The collage areas could also be used for seasonal displays, such as a Christmas theme. With space in Hong Kong at such a premium, space-saving solutions are an obvious focus in home furnishing. Take high shelving, for example. 'Most Hong Kong apartments are pretty small, that's why we try to build everything upwards if there is space,' she said. 'It's part of what we call smart storage, combining good design with practicality,' said marketing manager Virginia Li. A study-cum-sofabed room setting also displays a smart storage concept in the shape of a corner shelving unit. 'The merit of corner shelving is the ability to use corner space efficiently. If you want a tidier look, you can add a curtain or fabric,' Ms Li said. In the same room are Ikea's handy Moppe storage boxes. They come in various sizes in unfinished plywood that can be stained different colours. An abundance of similar mini-storage solutions are found in the home accessories section - from box files for papers to wall-mounted organising ideas. The ultimate in storage solutions is the walk-in closet. 'Though it's not 100 per cent realistic, the idea is to give people inspiration. You can have all your clothes and daily necessities in there and there are smart solutions for different things,' Ms Li said. Another area where Ikea educates is in lighting. The Mongkok store has a special room setting called 'Furnish with Lighting'. 'Most people put up a ceiling light and that's it. It's general rather than specific lighting,' Ms Li said. Various types of lighting are displayed, including cabinet lighting, an angle-poise floor lamp for reading, table lamps and mood lighting.
