A BURGLAR who took part in a restaurant knife raid and stole from his girlfriend's family was yesterday told by a judge to rent a video. District Court Judge Chua told the part-time barman to watch Cocktail, in the hope it would motivate him to switch from crime to full-time bartending. The movie, starring Tom Cruise, centres on the tropical island adventures of a pair of drink-juggling bartenders. 'See the things they get up to,' Judge Chua told the robber. 'It might appeal to you. You can learn to mix the exotic drinks . . . so there is a future for you.' Lau Wai-ming, 23, was sentenced to four years and four months in jail after pleading guilty to robbery, burglary and obtaining property by deception. Before passing sentence, the judge observed: 'Although you started your criminal career last year, you've got involved in some serious offences. When you come out, I want you to promise me you'll think 'it wasn't worth it' . . . promise me that?' Lau swore that he would. He was part of a gang who broke into the safe of a Wendy's restaurant after tying up two female members of staff. In the early hours of July 24, the assistant manageress of Wendy's restaurant was chatting with a cashier in the back of the closed food shop when a man armed with a fruit knife burst in. Pointing it at the cashier's neck, he ordered the assistant manager to open the safe. Lau and his fellow culprits escaped with more than $18,000 cash. In December last year, the robber went to his girlfriend's flat while her parents were away on holiday. When he left, he took her father's Visa card and the front door key. He then went on a two-day shopping spree, charging $17,000 worth of food and jewellery with the card. When he had exhausted Cheung Kin-kwok's credit, he returned the card, using the stolen key. He then burgled the flat, raiding the family jewellery box. Mr Cheung and his wife returned on December 4 and discovered more than $40,000 worth of jewellery had disappeared. Defence lawyer Yaddy Cheung said Lau was willing to testify against his co-conspirators.
