Piracy threat

THE United States is threatening punitive action against China if it continues with lax enforcement of its agreement to protect copyrighted American products.

US officials said Beijing had 'taken some significant steps' to curtail piracy, but firms had complained that since the signing, Chinese bootlegging of their products still had cost them US$900 million, a statistic they said proved Beijing was failing to enforce the agreement adequately.
