THE stampede tragedy at Lan Kwai Fong on New Year's Eve which killed 20 people has taught Hongkong teenagers a hard lesson - it is important to have self-control when during festive celebrations.
This is one of the conclusions drawn from a Young Post survey on the response of teenagers towards the incident in which most of the victims were young people.
Most interviewees said everyone at Lan Kwai Fong that night should bear some responsibility.
''I couldn't believe it when I heard the news. There were too many people at the spot. Some were drunk, and many lost control fooling around,'' said Mak Kin-yu, 20.
Jeffrey Leung Chin-fai, a Form 7 student at The Church of Christ in China Kwai Wah Shan College, had planned to go to Lan Kwai Fong on New Year's Eve. Fortunately, he ended up in Victoria Park, instead.
''I could have been one of the 20 victims if I were there,'' the 19-year-old student said.
