A NOVEL hospitality idea has become a magnet for travellers who prefer not to stay in hotels.
The Boathouse, a 36-room beachfront retreat, has been described by its operators as 'a restaurant with rooms'.
Good cuisine and wine are the main attractions and it is one of the few hostelries in Asia that flies in Michelin Star chefs.
Earlier this year, Henk Savelberg, a top chef in the Netherlands who has earned a Michelin recommendation and one of only two from the country to earn the Wedgewood Award, presented a banquet called 'Windmills and Waves' (alluding to a Dutchman meeting the pounding surf of Kata beach).
The feast featured Phuket's delicacies - tiger prawns and red snapper - in addition to sweetbread of New Zealand veal.
Chef Savelberg was followed by John Quimby of the Middlebrook restaurant in Vermont who cooked for a promotion of Californian wine.
