MICROSOFT has launched the Chinese-language version of Windows 95 and Office 95 in Hong Kong, four months after the English version.

'We dramatically shortened the development cycle for Chinese Windows 95 by considering local language requirements during the creation of the English product,' said Laurie Kan, managing director of Microsoft Hong Kong.

The system offers a floating input system for Chinese characters and an automatic context chooser.

The BiaoKai font on Windows 3.1 has been improved and a new font, MingLi has been added.

Rendering and printing have been speeded up and new hinting technology enables display and printing in small point sizes with no great loss of clarity. The interactive help system has also been improved, according to the company.

Chinese Windows is also capable of running English software such as Word 95 or Excel alongside Chinese applications.

As with the English version of Windows 95, the Chinese version offers Internet connection but with the bilingual Chinese-language Internet Explorer.
