PLANS to reclaim more large sections of the harbour could be reviewed, the Government said yesterday.

This is despite a spokesman for Chief Secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang denying a newspaper report that she had ordered a reassessment of harbour reclamation.

A government spokesman confirmed there might be further studies on whether it was necessary to reclaim 636 hectares of Victoria Harbour or whether areas in the New Territories could be developed instead.

These investigations would be done as part of an on-going review of the territory development strategy due for completion early next year.

'The review may also include reclamation methods, but there won't be any change in emphasis between the harbour and the New Territories until the results of the review are known,' said a Planning, Environment and Lands Branch spokesman.

The change of heart is believed to be in response to mounting pressure from legislators, 'green' groups, the public and China questioning the need for huge amounts of reclamation and the source of fill.
