But the $435,000 blackmail attempt by Chan Wing-kin, 30, against his ex-partner, Cheung Sau-pang, was foiled when the drama was captured by in-store surveillance cameras, the District Court heard yesterday.

The video, taken on November 11, 1993, in Mr Cheung's Carnarvon Road clothing store, was played back in court yesterday.

It showed Chan and three other men enter the shop and approach Mr Cheung, 32. One of the men then pulled out a copy of a $435,000 cheque for Chan, supposedly endorsed by Mr Cheung's signature.

Mr Cheung was told the cheque had bounced and if he did not honour it, he would be beaten up, the court heard.

Mr Cheung told the court that Chan then said he would find someone to beat him up.
