TWO people were injured early today when riot police dispersed about 1,000 protesting teachers, pupils and their parents from outside the Governor's Palace. The demonstrators were demanding that their former school principal, allegedly sacked a few months ago by the Macau Diocese, be reinstated. They wanted to meet Portuguese President Dr Mario Soares, who is in Macau for today's airport opening. The principal of the Catholic Instituto D. Melchior Carneiro, Father Benjamin Pires, has alleged that his resignation letter and signature were forged. Earlier, about 2,000 people had marched past the bishop's office, hurling eggs at the entrance. They marched on to the education authorities' offices, and the Governor's Palace where they staged a sit-in. Father Pires asked the crowds to return home. He and several protesters held talks with Dr Soares last night.
