A MAGISTRATE decided not to visit alleged tax evader Chong Tsoi-jun in hospital yesterday because he thought the patient was still too sick.
Magistrate Yung Yiu-wing was responding to defence lawyer Andrew Lam's invitation in Eastern Court yesterday to visit Chong in an intensive care unit to explain his rights in a case involving an alleged $60 million tax evasion.
The businessman was expected to appear before Mr Yung over what is believed to be the biggest tax fraud case in the territory's history.
But he failed to turn up for the second time.
Chong, 49, was still in the Hong Kong Sanatorium after spinal surgery a week ago, the court heard.
Mr Lam told the court Chong was unable to move his right leg and was suffering from diabetes insipidus, a disease which led to a malfunctioning kidney.
