What is a higher diploma? Higher diploma programmes in Hong Kong are very similar to the associate or foundation degrees that were first introduced to Hong Kong as a strategy to boost post-secondary enrolment in the territory. Higher diploma programmes, like their associate degree counterparts, are two-year post-secondary school programmes with concentrations in business, arts, sciences, and everything in between. While the programmes may be similar, the most notable difference between a higher diploma and an associate degree is its course specialisation. For example, an associate or foundation degree in accounting at HKU Space will focus its course material on 36% generic skills, 27% general education, and 37% on your chosen subject matter, whereas a higher diploma accounting course at HKU Space, would have students specialising in which type of accounting they want to receive their diploma. Along with a specialisation, 34% of the programme would be on generic skills and the remainder of the programme would be dedicated to the chosen accounting specialisation.
Higher diploma programmes are offered by most community colleges and also includes well known universities in Hong Kong, such as Hong Kong University (through HKU Space) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
After completing the two-year higher diploma programme, a student walks away with a higher diploma in their field of study. Higher diploma graduates can then choose to one of two paths: complete a bachelor degree or head directly into the workforce. Higher diploma graduates that choose to complete a bachelor degree, similar to the UK system, have options right in Hong Kong with universities offering top up degrees that will give you a fully accredited bachelor degree.
Not only are you eligible for top up degrees or bachelor degrees in Hong Kong, you can explore other education options overseas as well. Often the institution that you have completed your higher diploma with will have direct credit transfer to a top up degree or a bachelor degree programme with overseas universities in Australia, Canada, China, and the UK. Check with your post-secondary institute to find out more information about your options of transferring or applying to complete your degree at a recognised overseas university.
For those heading into the workforce after graduation having a higher diploma is advantageous when it comes to business or health sciences where having a specialty can mean a better job and higher salary. Higher diploma graduates are also eligible for government jobs after completing their schooling.
