TAIPEI has no plans to take its organisations out of Hong Kong after 1997, a top minister said yesterday.

Taiwanese Minister of Overseas Chinese Affairs John Chang Hsiao-yen was speaking during a two-day visit to the territory as a guest of the joint-meeting of the Asian Taiwanese Businessmen Association.

Taiwanese groups in Hong Kong played a positive role in encouraging economic and cultural exchanges, Mr Chang said.

He was on his third visit to Hong Kong, the last having been in March last year.

He said he had no problem securing a visa to enter Hong Kong, but declined to comment on whether this was a sign of improving cross-strait relations.

Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen has said Taiwan organisations in Hong Kong would not be allowed to conduct activities outside their remit.

Mr Qian's statement was widely seen as a serious threat to the survival of most of Taiwan's Hong Kong organisations after 1997.
