Melbourne-based Monotraction broke new ground when it signed an agreement with Minhang district's Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Commission to build the city's first monorail.

The elevated railway, which will take about three years to build, will run from Xinzhuang industrial zone to a railway station on the Shanghai metropolitan line in Minhang Economic and Trade Development Zone.

Under the deal, Monotraction will provide funding while the Chinese provide the land.

Monotraction will build the bogies for the monorail vehicles, while another Australian firm, Connell Wagner, will design the infrastructure.

This is one of several public transport projects planned for the next five years in a bid to ease Shanghai's chronic commuter congestion.
