According to the Registry of Companies, a territory resident named Lam Chui Fun formed Lifeway Limited with Wei's brother, Wei Xiaotao, in December 1993. Both served as directors.

Miss Lam resigned on Wednesday from the United Daily News, where she worked as a reporter.

In a statement last night, she said she joined the company at Wei Xiaotao's request, and knew nothing of its operations or activities.

'I acted upon Beijing merchant Wei Xiaotao's request to become a nominal director, shareholder and the company secretary of his company Lifeway Limited in Hong Kong in 1993.' Miss Lam explained that according to the Hong Kong Companies Ordinance, each registered company needs at least two directors and the company secretary must be a Hong Kong citizen.

She said she was deeply troubled by the event and denied that she had any actual involvement in the company. 'In practice, I had never participated in any executive or administrative work of the company and knew nothing about its commercial or other activities,' Miss Lam said.
