PROMISING youngster Sea Jade can get back in the winning thread by taking an uncompetitive eighth event on what looks a great betting card at Sha Tin this afternoon. Sea Jade predictably failed to handle the hurly-burly of racing on the dirt last time out when running on strongly into fourth behind Team Valour in a very strong Class Three mile event by the standards of racing on the artificial surface. This was despite being severely checked down the back straight though this check was partly caused by not being able to handle the dirt so that he was already being niggled along by Rambo Tse. If he had been travelling easily, he would almost certainly have had the toe to get out of the position he was in and thus escape the buffeting he took. All the same he showed tremendous resolution to get back up into fourth having been shuffled back to nearly last shortly before they entered the bottom bend. Since then Sea Jade has been noted in his trackwork and he appears to have progressed from that run. Sometimes a run on the dirt can set back a young horse so Sea Jade was worth paying special attention to in his work. But with him the opposite seems to be the case. One morning as the barrier trials were taking place, he looked to be going extremely well on the inside track and then on Thursday he worked as well if not better than ever when jumping out down the back straight with his top Class One stablemate, Super Fit. Now former Derby winner, Super Fit, is a very good worker down a straight course so it was an excellent effort from Sea Jade to be able to keep tabs with him and one which suggests that Sea Jade has not stopped improving. That is also the impression from Sea Jade's form which, treating the all-weather run as very much the exception, has been on an upward trend. He was badly hampered on his first outing as a griffin before then running really well on his second and only other griffin start. He needed the run first time out this season, but still managed to stay on well to be beaten just 11/2 lengths into third behind by Gagne Vite and Lucky Sound who went on to win and run second on their next outings, very much underlining the merit of the form. Sea Jade then came out and put in a very strong win when racing up on the pace and then holding Owner's Bliss and Racing Ace by three quarters of a length in a very strong form race over this afternoon's course and distance. Owner's Bliss has come out and placed since while Racing Ace has since won and run second. What's more the fourth, On Shan Speedie, has subsequently won as has the sixth, Faisca, while seventh placed Supreme Universe has won no less than twice. The ninth, Gallant Dragon, has placed and the 12th, Mannidear, has also run in the money since. So Sea Jade's form is there for all to see and what makes him an even better bet is that he appears to have struck a very 'thin' event in that there do not look to be too many realistic dangers. The Lam Hung-fie-trained Polish Admiral could be the main quinella hope with Sea Jade. Polish Admiral first sprung to notice when trialling well down the straight 1,000-metre course early on in the season. He then needed his debut run before putting in a creditable third behind Lucky Afleet and Kowloon Pride over 1,200 metres at Sha Tin. The first two did draw clear, but they are very smart young horses and Polish Admiral was still just coming to himself. Since then he has really blossomed in his work. He has handed out a real hammering to stablemate, Planet, in his last two pieces and the move to 1,400 metres should suit. Champion apprentice Simon 'Hong Kong' Yim takes a handy three pounds from his back and Yim is always worth noting when his services are called upon by Lam. Grand Way, who has been running consistently and not been beaten far on his most recent outings, is another to keep safe in the quinella and tierce pools. Kowloon Pride can earlier give a pointer to Sea Jade's chances by taking the feature Police Cup. He has not stopped improving yet under David Hill's guidance and should be too good for them. His trackwork has been excellent and he looks a lovely type.
