THE importance of reading cannot be over-emphasised, said the Director of Education Lam Woon-kwong, who was the chief guest at the recent speech day of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians Siu Ming Catholic Secondary School.

Addressing the students, who had gathered at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Mr Lam pointed out that reading helped us broaden our horizons and understand the world around us.

Learning is a life-long process for which we must develop the reading habit, he said, calling attention to the Extensive Reading Scheme which is to be launched in schools.

The Education Department is promoting the scheme as a part of the primary school curriculum. Thirty primary schools will take up the Chinese Extensive Reading Scheme in September next year.

Mr Lam said the scheme would help students to understand the world around them and appreciate life, and this in turn would build up stronger interpersonal relations.
