The retired general is widely viewed as a powerful figure who continues to wield considerable clout within the Army.
He relinquished his last official title in 1992 when he stepped down from the powerful Central Military Commission.
The Xinhua reports indicate that not only was the 89-year-old general in relative good health, he was also actively concerned about state affairs.
