A 60-YEAR-OLD woman was arrested yesterday in Ma On Shan in connection with a foiled attempt to smuggle more than 50 illegal immigrants to Japan in cargo containers.
The woman was the second local resident arrested in the case.
A 27-year-old man was arrested late on Friday, along with two other men at the Kwai Fong MTR station, when the three were involved in a minor scuffle.
The two were later identified as illegal immigrants and were believed to be part of the human cargo, police said. The 54 men and one woman - believed to be from Fujian province - were hidden inside containers consigned for Japan.
Police said the two local residents were believed to be snakeheads.
The man was charged yesterday with aiding illegal immigrants while the woman was being held for questioning.
