ANOTHER 13 criminals were executed in Shenzhen yesterday, bringing the number of death sentences carried out in the city in the past week to 26.

  Those killed yesterday - for murder, rape and robbery - were among 33 criminals sentenced by the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court.

   The orders for their execution were confirmed by the Guangdong People's Higher Court before the sentences were carried out, the semi-official Hong Kong China News Agency said, adding those executed were found guilty of 10 separate offences.

  Five involved murders and robberies and the others were convicted of rape or forcing people into prostitution.

  Last Friday, 13 gangsters using women to lure unsuspecting lorry drivers to their deaths were executed.

 Meanwhile, a newspaper reported that 19 people had been executed in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, after being convicted of similar crimes.

  The executions were carried out last Friday after a public trial.

  Faced with soaring violent crime, Chinese judges have been told to use heavier sentences - including the death penalty - to punish serious criminals.

  At least 1,865 people were executed by the Chinese Government in the first six months of this year.

  The London-based human rights group Amnesty International estimates the final count for 1995 could be as high as 4,000.
