YOUR correspondent Peter Sherwood's cynical letter (South China Morning Post, December 13) on Hong Kong's 'efforts' to combat pollution hit the nail right on the head and was highlighted by the decision of our worthy Legislative Council (reported that day) not to support the Government's proposal to phase out diesel driver vehicles.

  What a legacy this short-sighted (vested interest?) approach is leaving for Hong Kong's children. Their children!   Still, so long as they have a Mercedes to take them to the chest clinic never mind, eh.

   Legco's attitude is akin to that displayed by the users of communal toilets who steadfastly refuse to flush them, that is, the problem will be sorted out by whoever's next.
