THE first animated sex education video in Hongkong has failed to receive enthusiastic response, as most parents still regard the topic as taboo.

The Joy of Life , released last month, was produced by A Folimage Valence Productions in France; it has both English and Chinese versions.

The Family Planning Association of Hongkong is the consultant for the Chinese version.

The animation comprises two 45-minute episodes with a supplementary guideline to parents, telling them the approach to teach their children.

There are 20 sub-topics in the programme - from body structure of the male and female to chromosomes, sexual instinct and family life.

Mr Joseph Wan Chi-kong, who is the executive director of First Concept International, the video's distributor in Hongkong, said he was a bit disappointed about the sale.

''Sex education is best taught by parents because through discussion on something which used to be regarded as a taboo, it will create a bond among family members,'' he said.
