A LEADING local adviser to China, Leung Chun-ying, called for a review of the present quota of legal immigrants from China in face of the unemployment problem.
Mr Leung, a businessman and member of the now-defunct Preliminary Working Committee, said the current total number of migrants from the mainland at about 40,000 a year has put more pressure on the problem of finding jobs for local people.
He said last night the issuing of one-way permits for the migrants should be determined after taking into account the demographic structure and economic needs of the society.
'We should not allow immigrants in without any restriction,' said Mr Leung.
Stricter requirements for the immigrants should be imposed on the basis of occupational skills, family background, education and language levels, he said.
But he said priority should still be given to those who sought family reunions.
