Fu-in got a new lease of life in early 1992 when she had a transplant in Australia thanks to a $2 million donation by South China Morning Post readers. She was suffering from a blockage in the bile duct which hindered her ability to clean blood. Fu-in has regular check-ups at the hospital. Mother Lau Chan Miu-ying said: 'She never complains about the blood tests. She just looks away and lets the nurse do the job. It's like magic. She was once like a weak, budding flower; now she has grown up.' This year, 13 patients have had liver transplants at the hospital.
