ONLY one of the seven recreation centres set up for overseas domestic helpers will remain open during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The closure of the other six is part of an agreement between the schools and the organiser, the Hong Kong Bayanihan Trust. 'We have agreed that the centres would be closed to the workers on school holidays,' said Frebbie Bartolome, director of a centre in Kennedy Town, which is the only one open during holidays. The Kennedy Town centre is open to workers all the time while the others are open on Sundays only. There are about 150,000 domestic helpers in Hong Kong. A Filipino group said the centres should not be closed. 'If they want to provide activities for domestic workers, they should be open in the holidays because the workers are free on holidays,' said Prem Dangal of the Asian Migrant Centre.
