LOCATING a golf course on an island presented a novel problem for the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. How to transport thousands of golfers to the territory's first public course on an island 10 minutes off the coast of the New Territories near Sai Kung? The answer was to provide a specially-equipped ferry and service to accommodate golfers and their bulky gear. The Jockey Club commissioned Hong Kong-based boat builders Halvorsen Marine to provide a craft. Halvorsen has a 127-year history of building pleasure boats but is a relatively new player in ferry boat manufacturing. The challenge for Mark Halvorsen was unprecedented. However, it was also one well within his firm's design capabilities. Three years earlier, the company had formed a joint venture with China Merchant Development, a Shenzhen-based commercial ferry boat manufacturer, to produce 46-seat ferries. 'The Jockey Club approached us about the possibility of using our vessels,' Mr Halvorsen said. 'However, they said certain modifications would be needed to transport golfers and their gear. 'The modifications involved reverting to a maximum 33-seat vessel, installing golf bins on the back deck and leaving additional space inside. There are four vessels, each with two crew members - an operator with a combined coxswain and engineer's ticket and a cabin boy. The vessels are equipped to run continuously for 13 hours.'
