CHINA'S Ministry of Electric Power will be disbanded next year when its government functions will be transferred to other state commissions.

The restructure, announced on Tuesday, will see the responsibilities of the ministry split among a national power corporation, other government administrative bodies and the China Federation of Power Enterprises.

While the national power corporation would take up the enterprise function, the ministry's government function would be given to commissions such as the State Planning Commission and the State Economic and Trade Commission, the China Daily said yesterday, quoting ministry officials.

The China Federation will act as the sector's regulator.

The reform is aimed at revitalising the backward sector. Its output has failed to catch up with the surging demand for electricity along with rapid economic development.

A lawyer said the overhaul would not be enough to overcome barriers to the development of the sector because the mainland still lacked a set of clear guidelines governing project approval process.
