LABOUR Department officials are to be summoned to give evidence for the Legislative Council probe into deductions from the wages of mainland workers on airport-related projects.

Democratic Party legislator Michael Ho Mun-ka said yesterday the manpower panel inquiry would first focus on how much the department knew about the disputes.

It would also look at how the department had been monitoring the special labour importation scheme for the airport core programme. Mr Ho said officials, frontline officers and contractors employing the mainlanders would be summoned.

However, it would be hard to get the mainland go-betweens to appear.

Meanwhile, the department has been urged to visit the Chek Lap Kok passenger terminal site to check claims that 240 workers from China have received only five per cent of their pay.
