THE Environmental Campaign Committee yesterday drew attention to another casualty of the newspaper war - much-increased paper use.

It used the Waste Paper Collection day, which gathered paper equivalent to 3,536 trees, to encourage consumers to dispose of waste paper properly.

'As the prices of newspaper become so attractive, it is quite natural people will buy more thus generating a large volume of waste paper,' said chairman Peggy Lam Pei Yu-dja.

Although smaller newspapers have closed, the circulation of others has soared.

After seven hours yesterday 208 tonnes of paper had been collected from 55 public housing estates, with Yiu Tung Estate in Sai Wan Ho residents proving the most enthusiastic.

The Environmental Protection Department estimates 269,000 tonnes of waste paper are recycled every year.
