LENGTHS of rubber have been fitted on the edge of a platform at the KCR's Kowloon Tong station as part of trial to improve safety.
The United States-made 'platform gap filler' is tough enough to take passengers' weight, but flexible enough to bend with the weight of the trains.
A total of 130 KCR passengers were injured, most slightly, in accidents in the first nine months of this year, 32 due to the gap between platform and train, said the company's quality and safety manager, Leung Kai-wing, A large-scale trial will be held this year at Tai Po Market station, where accidents related to platform gaps occur most frequently.
Mr Leung said one filler would be fitted at the edge of the platform outside each train door.
The fillers would be about three metres long and seven centimetres in width and height, he said.
The KCR has installed blue neon lights fitted along the platform edge to alert passengers of the gaps at Kowloon Tong, Mongkok, Tai Wo, University and Lowu stations.
