Tan faces brain scan after stroke
FORMER Carrian boss George Tan suffered a stroke on New Year's Eve and is undergoing treatment, a court heard yesterday.
Defence counsel Mr Gary Alderdice told the District Court that Tan's condition had yet to stabilise, and it was too early to tell what effect the stroke had had. Tan, 58, was receiving treatment at a private hospital and was to undergo a brain scan.
The court yesterday heard a Crown application for Tan's trial to be adjourned to January 3 next year. He faces eight charges of bribing three bank executives.
The case was due to be heard on May 3.
Legal Department consultant Mr Graham Harris asked for the trial to be adjourned pending the outcome of a case surrounding the Malaysian company Bumiputra Malaysia Finance Limited (BMFL).
Mr Alderdice raised no objection and Judge Hawkes granted the application and extended Tan's bail of $50 million.
