Approval for abortion bill

WARSAW: Parliament's lower house approved legislation yesterday to restrict abortions, but it watered down a bill backed by the Catholic Church that would have outlawed all abortions.

A referendum on the bill proposed by a group of 120 deputies was rejected. The bill, allowing abortion in rape cases, and where there is serious deformity or a threat to life, now goes before the Senate.
