Triad sentenced for extortion

A SUN Yee On triad member was sentenced to three years' jail in the District Court yesterday for extorting more than $76,000 from construction companies.

Ko Chi-yau, 34, a decorator, pleaded guilty to seven counts of blackmail and one count of claiming to be a member of a triad society.

Sentencing Ko to two and a half years for the blackmail charges and six months for claiming to be a member of a triad member, Judge Barbara Chan said the total amount of money involved was $76,500.

Crown Counsel Phyllis Wong said Ko and other men demanded money from construction companies in Tsim Sha Tsui and Hunghom between May, 1992, and July, last year.
