SOME travel agencies have stopped whitewater rafting trips pending inquiries into Monday's tragedy in Bali which killed three Hong Kong tourists.

'High-risk' activities such as whitewater rafting, skiing and paragliding would be reviewed to see how such tours might be better arranged and insured, said a travel agents' group.

A rafter who witnessed the Unda River accident returned yesterday, complaining about poor communication and the rescue operation.

The man said: 'There was heavy rain. But they [the raft operators] said it was all right and there should not be a problem.

'They said similar situations had happened before and there had been no problem.

'So we went ahead. But then we saw several rafts in front of us had already overturned. Some people were floating in the water but we could do nothing to help. Our raft later ran aground but no one came to our rescue.' He said if the operators had been better informed, they might have cancelled the trip after the first boats ran into trouble.

Five of six rafts for a group of 28 people from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea overturned after being hit by a flash flood five minutes into the journey.
