ONE lucky punter could scoop a world record payout of $100 million if there is only a single winner of this afternoon's Triple Trio at Sha Tin. The exotic bet requires punters to select the first three, in any order, in races three, four and six and there was already over $49 million bet yesterday to go with the $45.3 million carried forward. 'We expect another 20 to 30 million to be bet tomorrow so if there is only one winner for a $10 stake that lucky person could be walking away with over $100 million,' said the Jockey Club's information secretary Wilson Cheng yesterday. Meanwhile, the curtain finally came down on Hong Kong's controversial first Select Sale when the rejected colt by Zoffany out of Only A Rumour was sold for $801,110. This means that the Jockey Club management's blunder of not telling its members that the colt had already passed out unsold at a sale in Australia has cost the Club $198,890. This is the amount the Club has to make up as the tender fell short of the original purchase price of $1 million paid for the colt. The original buyer returned the colt when he found it had already been through an Australian sales ring. The Stewards of the Jockey Club decided that the bay colt, Lot No 14 at the Sales, should be put up for tender with those members who had a permit for next season permitted to bid. The new owner is Sidney Chiu Yung-sit and he sent him to be trained by John Moore. Chiu already has Moon Dancer in training with Moore. In other news, Jockey Club Stewards are expected to shortly approve the installation of a new training track at Sha Tin that has taken Sydney by storm. The present all-weather track at the main racecourse has been frequently criticised by trainers. A surface based on American dirt but treated to ensure it handles rain and humidity has been in use in Sydney for many months and has received rave reports from Randwick trainers. The surface is called Trackmaster and it is sold on the basis that it will come with its own curator. This means that its maintenance will fall outside the domain of Jockey Club tracks staff.
