SELECTING the right suppliers will be critical in developing the market potential of China and Vietnam, which the Schmidt Group considers to be its growth areas.
Regional business development director Jan Wong said: 'We are widening our supplier market in Vietnam.' Responsible for the group's electronics business, Mr Wong is involved in training staff and selecting suppliers for the two countries.
Items considered for Vietnam include educational products for universities, building circuitry, telecommunications testing equipment and electronic calibration equipment.
'At present, the [Vietnamese] government is doing the buying and foreign investors are still a small market,' Mr Wong said.
'We are building up the government market first and plan to penetrate the industrial market later.
'I don't feel that our business will develop rapidly during the next five years but, in the long term, it will be substantial.' Schmidt set up an electronic engineering division in the 1960s to take advantage of the industrial sector in Hong Kong.
The division expanded and, at one stage, included test and measuring and distributor products, all of which have been linked up to form Schmidt Electronics.
