A COMPACT disc pirate dubbed a pioneer of music counterfeiting in Asia has finally met his match.
Shi Hua-lek, 41, was given a one-year jail sentence in Taiwan and was ordered by a Shanghai court to pay $7 million in compensation to the record industry.
But Shi's whereabouts are unclear and it is not known whether he is serving the jail sentence.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said Shi used equipment and fake documents from the territory to run his operation in China and then escaped when the industry brought a massive suit against him.
At the same time, the federation was also fighting a long-running legal battle to press criminal charges against Shi in Taiwan.
After a number of appeals, the High Court handed down the prison sentence in late November.
