Students get in on Rotary act
FORTY-NINE students from the Sir Ellis Kadoorie Secondary School in Sha Tin joined the 50,000-strong worldwide Interact Club network by setting up the first Interact Club in the school.
Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sha Tin, the new Interact Club will receive $10,000 annually, of which $3,000 will be used to run the club and the rest will be go to the school's new Internet Scholarship.
Teacher Leung Wai-ming told Young Post that the new scholarship was not purely academic - community services would be a crucial factor.
'Since the purpose of Interact or Rotary Clubs is to elicit students to take part in more voluntary social services, the scholarship will place similar emphasis in this area,' he said.
Hui Yin-wai, community service director of the Rotary Club of Sha Tin, will take up the post as adviser for the new Interact Club and help it to lay the groundwork for charity activities.
Last month, the budding Interact members initiated their first official venture by giving a helping hand to Green Power by collecting wastepaper at schools.
The collection will continue until the end of this month.
