Sergeant Cheng Tsan-chow, 35, from the Kowloon West crimes unit, and Constable Kung Tin-choi, 36, from the anti-triad section of the Kwai Ching district, are on trial at the District Court, charged with four counts of accepting advantages and three of soliciting advantages. They deny all the charges.

Cheng Sung-tak, 44, the operator of Kam Lung Villa in San Po Kong, had fled to Shenzhen after an illegal immigrant accused him of rape and false imprisonment in April 1994, the court heard.

Yesterday Mr Cheng testified that a friend, Kam Wai-chi, 44, had brought two men to meet him in Shenzhen.

The two had asked for a bribe of $200,000 to help him avoid prosecution.

But the two men who sought the bribe were not the two defendants appearing in court, he said.

Mr Cheng also told the court that he had never again seen the two men who sought bribes after he returned to the territory in July.
