MAERSK Line of Denmark and Sea-Land Service of the United States have finalised their service schedules in the Transpacific and Asia-Europe trades.

  From the middle of this year, seven weekly line-haul services will be provided between Asia and the Americas: six strings via the Pacific Ocean and one via the Suez Canal.

  In the Asia-Europe trade lanes, four weekly line-haul services will be offered.

  The partnership will allow Maersk and Sea-Land to offer shippers faster transit times, more flexibility and more direct ports of call.

  Highlights of the new plan include:    Direct service from Shanghai, Pusan and Thailand to and from the US west coast.

   A direct, fast service from Southeast Asia to the US North Atlantic coast via the Suez Canal.

  Direct service from Shanghai, Pusan and Yantian to Europe.

  Dedicated service between Europe and the Middle East and Indian sub-continent.

   Direct calls at Vancouver, Canada.

   Direct service from Pacific Northwest to Southeast Asia.

  'Great care has been taken to accommodate the future needs of our respective customers,' said John Clancey, president and chief executive of Sea-Land Service.

  Ib Kruse, partner of A. P. Moller, parent company of Maersk Line, said: 'We are pleased to be able to offer this unique network package to the trade.'   Part of the plan will be put in place later this month enabling the two firms to introduce new features in the Transpacific trade.

  Direct calls at Vancouver will begin on February 6 and the first call at Laem Chabang, Thailand, is scheduled for February 19.

  The first call at Pusan will be on February 7 and at Shanghai on February 10. Details for the Far East-Middle East, US-Middle East, Intra-European and Intra-Asia services will be finalised soon, he said.

  Transatlantic and South America trades will continue unchanged for the time being.
