A BORDER soldier in Hainan has been disciplined for beating a taxi driver who refused to take him.

Sanctions were handed down after a probe into the incident last weekend which triggered a strike by about 100 taxi drivers, a Commissar from the Frontier Guard in the capital Haikou said.

The incident happened outside the Xingang Pier on Saturday. The soldier lost his temper when a taxi driver drove past him, apparently also running over his foot.

'According to our investigation, the soldier was found guilty of using violence against citizens. He is now under disciplinary punishment,' the Commissar said yesterday.

'Soldiers should not be involved in private brawls. But we believe it was just a minor dispute caused by personal feelings. It is a rare incident in our city,' he said.

The driver, treated in Haikou Hospital, was 'only slightly hurt', the Commissar added.
