THE Jardine-led consortium should give up its interest in Container Terminal 9 (CT9) by taking a berth each from Modern Terminals (MTL) and Hong Kong International Terminals (HIT), industry sources have suggested.

'This will take the Jardines out of the running for CT9 and include the Chinese side to bless the project quickly,' one source said.

The sources said Jardines' Tsing Yi Consortium should take the one-berth Terminal 2 from MTL and one berth of the three-berth Terminal 4 from HIT.

This will give the group a good stretch of quayside, with Terminals 2, 3 and 4 sharing adjacent lengths of waterfront.

Terminal 3 is operated by Seal-Land Orient Terminals (SLOT), a member of the Tsing Yi Consortium slated to manage the two berths alloted the group at CT9.

Earlier, HIT and MTL had offered to give up one berth each at CT8 to the Tsing Yi Consortium in exchange for its two berths at CT9.

The other two berths at CT9 were alloted to HIT and MTL. The exchange would have enabled the two to have two berths each at CT9.
