Film categories in line with US

I WISH to respond to Damien Hazelton's criticism that our film classification system is flawed in his letter 'New film categories pathetic' (South China Morning Post, January 9).

He made his point by quoting the films Waterworld and Seven. We classified Waterworld as Category II (not suitable for children) in August 1995. This was an old category that was redefined by two new sub-divisions, Category IIa and Category IIb, as from November 17, 1995. Seven was classified as Category IIb (not suitable for young persons and children).

Both classifications are advisory and children can see them with parental guidance. Our two new sub-divisions of Category II aim to give more information to movie-goers, particularly parents, in choosing films for themselves and their children.

We understand that in the US these two films were classified respectively as PG-13 (parents strongly cautioned, some materials may be inappropriate for children under 13) and Restricted (under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian).

These two classifications also call for parental guidance if children/young persons are to see the two films. These show that our classifications are generally in line with those overseas.
