ERIC Cantona scored one and made another as Manchester United moved to the top of the English Premier soccer league for the first time this season with a stylish 4-1 thrashing of Tottenham at Old Trafford yesterday.
The win put Alex Ferguson's championship favourites on top on goal difference ahead of Aston Villa, who beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield, and Norwich, who can regain the top spot against Sheffield Wednesday today.
Cantona's fourth goal in four matches since the French international's GBP1.2 million-move from champions Leeds came just three minutes before the break, a looping header off a Dennis Irwin cross.
At the break it was still in the balance but United killed the match in the first 12 minutes of the second half. First Cantona produced a superb cross for Eire international Irwin to finish after 52 minutes.
A minute later, Brian McClair, revelling in the midfield role he has adopted since the arrival of Cantona, made it three with a stunning 30-yard drive that gave Norwegian international Eric Thorstvedt no chance.
The Scot then matched Cantona's performance by turning provider. A sweet one-two with Paul Parker put the full-back into the box and the England defender made no mistake for his first goal since moving to Manchester.
