Nonie names the day and breaks hearts
CONSTERNATION, anguish and heartache will soon sweep across Asia - you read it here first.
In the 38 countries where satellite station STAR TV can be seen P.S. predicts a catastrophic outbreak of wailing and gnashing of teeth when fans of MTV Asia VJ Nonie Tao learn she is getting married later this year.
Nonie, 29, is to wed Jardine Fleming Finance fund director Douglas Eu in Maui, Hawaii, on April 10 after their engagement late last year.
Seattle-born Nonie was one of the first on-screen recruits to MTV when it was launched in September 1991. Before that she worked as an actress in soap operas and films in Taiwan and Hongkong.
Like many of the VJs, she has become as famous as the acts she introduces; her status as a heart-throb coul d propel thousands of male fans into depression.
In the meantime, the couple are busily preparing for the wedding, having decided Hawaii was a halfway point for guests drawn from both sides of the Pacific.
Fellow VJ Danny McGill may be looking a little more rumpled than usual following an all-night recording session at MTV's Hunghom studios.
McGill was signed by PolyGram several months ago to record some demo tracks with a view to putting out an album. Maybe it was pressure of work, or the excitement of Christmas, or his penchant for keeping nightclub staff in gainful employ, but McGill never got around to the project.
Clearly the record company had a quiet word in his ear, because last Wednesday he checked into the studio with a band and VJ Sophiya to warble background vocals.
The session went on until nine the next morning. We await the product with great interest . . .
